August 5, 2013 - The 12th Doctor
As a relatively new fan of Doctor Who, I'm very unfamiliar with most of the franchise, but I have watched enough episodes to get a general feel for the show and what it should be. I think the newest selection is an appropriate one and in many ways a callback to the first Four Doctors.
I've been re-watching the series from its Season 1 under the Ninth Doctor played by Christopher Eccleston through Season 4 with the Tenth Doctor portrayed by David Tennant. I have not watched anything featuring Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor. But will have to find time to catch up, hopefully before the 50th anniversary special in November.
I have pondered the audacious idea of re-watching the entirety of the franchise, but upon learning that there are as many as 100 episodes missing, doesn't help matters. However, the show is not really told in a linear fashion and does a magnificent job for casual viewers.
The new doctor was selected at 7pm on Sunday, August 4. He was revealed to be 55-year old Scottish actor Peter Capaldi. He would be the first older actor to portray the Doctor of the new series. The following links are related to Capaldi's work in "The Thick of It" and "In The Loop", forgive the mild language:
